Microchipping your dog or cat is great because if your pet becomes lost, you’ll be much more likely to be reunited if your furbaby is microchipped. Microchips are known as RFID devices (Radio Frequency Identification Device).

What Is a Microchip?
A microchip is a tiny device that contains unique identifying information about a pet.
It is approximately the size of a grain of rice and contains a code that corresponds to the contact information of the pet cat or dog’s owner. This allows missing cats/dogs to be returned to their rightful home as quickly as possible.
How Does Microchipping Work?
It is approximately the size of a grain of rice, and it contains a 15-digit number that is registered on a national database. This number corresponds with the contact information of the pet’s owner so that missing pets can be returned to their rightful home as quickly as possible.
Where Does the Vet Put The Microchip?
The microchip is inside a large needle that is inserted between the shoulder blades, where it cannot be removed or damaged. Once the microchip is in, it is there forever, keeping your pet safe and secure.
If your pet ever needs to be identified (for instance, if it has run off and been picked up by the authorities), any vet will be able to find the microchip using a handheld scanner.
Can I Check If My Pet Has a Microchip and If It's Registered?
If you have adopted a rescue animal or taken in a stray, you may be wondering if their owners are out there somewhere, looking for them. Alternatively, you may wish to confirm the existence of your pet’s microchip years after it has been installed.
It is very easy to check a microchip. Your vet will use a small scanning device, and the 15-digit number will then be checked against the national database.
What If My “Microchip” Contact Details Change?
When your pet is microchipped, your vet will ask you for your current contact details, which will be added to a national register. Your name, address, and telephone number will be permanently connected with the unique 15-digit number on your pet’s microchip, so if your pet goes missing, it can be traced back to you immediately.
However, it is important to make sure that your contact details are up to date. To update your contact details, contact your vet, and they will help you change any relevant information on the register.
Without accurate contact details, the benefits of microchipping your pet are lost.
Why Should I Register My Pet?
The City of Sydney requires that all cats and dogs must be registered before they are 6 months old. If your lovely little pet goes astray, the pound or vet will be able to use your pet’s microchip to find the registration details to contact you and quickly reunite you with your pet.
