Video Transcript:

Hello my name is Kim and this is my dog Charlie, I’m your accredited instructor from My Vet in Waterloo and Charlie and I going to show you how to learn how to shake a paw.

So, the way I teach is – I have a treat in my fingers and I hold it at nose level – to anchor the head, because if you reach down to grab the paw, usually the head would follow and that’s not what we want. So, I anchor the head and I reach down and grab the paw and I say shake and I release the treat into the dog’s mouth as I did. So, you need to do several sessions of this – shake, until the dog realises what you want like them to do. And then, you don’t need the piece of food near the mouth and you can reach down with your hand and it comes as a hand signal and we say shake, then you give the dog the reward. Now, to make that trick even more fun, we can teach other paw and that is done exactly the same way. I’ll show you the definitions of – shake, other paw, and the dog gets the reward.
