Step by Step Guide:

  • We show the cat how to sit by putting the lure on its nose and then, come up between its eyes and its ears.
  • As soon as the bottom hits the ground we say sit.
  • Next, we need to take that lure away because that will turn into a bribe. So, now just use your hand signal and verbal command.
  • It might take you a few repetitions to get this done.
  • Make him sit, and give the reward from the other hand.
  • With the high five, pop the treat in between the first two fingers, holding it nice and firmly.
  • Have the cat in a sit and present it to his shoulder level position and as the paw comes up, he gets the reward.
  • Once your cat can do this reliably, take away the reward and leave the hand signal and verbal command. You can also give the treat or reward from the other hand.

Video Transcript:

Hello my name is Kim and this one of my pets Mako and we are going to show you a sit and high five. Now, Mako already knows how to do this, so I’ll show you the finished product first.

Get him ready to a stand and sit, then high five. Good boy. How we get there is we show the cat into the sit, so, we get the cat into a stand, we put the lure on its nose come up between its eyes and its ears and as gravity has it, the bottom will hit the ground as soon as it does we say sit. We get him into a stand and then the nose – sit. Now, we need to take that lure away because that will turn into a bribe. So, now I am going to leave my hand signal and verbal, it might take you a few repetitions to get this done, but, I am moving a little quickly so, I can show you. Make him sit, and give the reward from the other hand.

Now, with the high five, we are going to pop the treat in between the first two fingers, hold it nice and firmly, have the cat in a sit and present it to his shoulder level position and as the paw comes up, he gets the reward. Soon, as he would do that reliably, I am going to take away the reward and leave my hand signal and verbal and then, I’ll give the treat or reward from the other hand. So, you can have fun teaching your cat tricks, they may not be quite motivated as dogs but if they like their food usually you get some good results.
